When
school is out, schedules can fly out the window, and with them, proper dental
practices. Amidst summer camps, vacations, and other fun activities, it is
important to remember the health of your teeth. Here are some tips on
maintaining your dental health during the summer.
SCHEDULE AN EXAM
Now that the kids are
out of school, your schedule might be more flexible to get your families’
dental exams in. This is a perfect time to have a thorough cleaning to make
sure your families teeth are ready for summer.
REMEMBER TO BRUSH & FLOSS REGULARLY
Keeping a routine over the summer time can be difficult. Set reminders
for yourself and your kids to brush and floss regularly, no matter where you
are enjoying the time off.
CHANGE YOUR TOOTHBRUSH
You should use the same toothbrush for about three to four months. It’s
hard to remember when you bought the family toothbrushes, so a good tip would
be to change with each new season. Start this summer – replaces toothbrushes
now and plan to again in the fall.
BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU ARE EATING
Summertime is full of BBQs and fun gatherings. Do your best to avoid
lots of sugary treats and drinks. Opt for water instead of soda and juice. If
you are going to eat a sweet treat, try and have it after a meal. Your mouth
will already have a lot of saliva from the meal and that will help keep sugars
from sticking to your teeth.
PROTECT YOUR LIPS
When focusing on the health of your teeth, you might forget how
important it is to protect your lips, too. Use a lip balm that contains SPF
protection to shield your lips from UV rays.
Summer is a time to relax and have fun. It is perfectly OK to indulge in
all that summer has to offer, just make sure to keep your oral hygiene routine
in the back of your mind.
